Alumni Lunch
Guangzhou English Training Center for the Handicapped
October 26, 2009
Ambassador Huntsman: It’s a pleasure to be here where I feel a lot of love. Do you know what love means? You know those words. Ai, right?
Right on the sign over here it says, what? Love is sunshine.
All: Love is Sunshine.
Ambassador Huntsman: I think there’s a lot of sunshine in this school. You know what I mean? A lot of sunshine, a lot of love.
Where’s Sofi? She gave me the tour. You can’t get away so easily.
Sofia gave me a great tour of the school, and she took me in every room. She told me what goes on in each room, and _____.
_____
I asked Sofi what she wanted to do, what she wanted to be, and she said ___. This could be an English teacher.
I told Sofi, I think she’s going to be a very good English teacher some day, because she’s already good enough to be an English teacher, right?
I want to thank all of our friends from the consulate who have made available some opportunities for programs, exchange programs, for many people to have access to the United States and to learn more about the United States and to bring home a better understanding of who we are in the United States. And to help and to volunteer here at the school. ____
So we want to make sure that you ___ are able to have opportunities to learn English, and also in the United States to give more opportunities to American youth to study Chinese. ____
So I want to thank all of the people here who have been part of volunteering. Do you know what volunteerism is? ____ Volunteer. ____
Volunteerism. ___ Everyone is human and our relationship between the United States and China begins with people. ____ It begins with people. That means people understanding other people, people communicating with each other heart to heart and mind to mind. That’s very important.
So I want to applaud so many of you who are studying English, and I pledge to you that I will encourage more people in my country, young people, to study Chinese because I think that will then allow the world to be a much more peaceful place, but also if we volunteer a little more, if we give our time, if we help each other, ____. If we’re going to make real progress we need to help each other. We need to study together and then [rest] together, right?
So this is a very good example of people helping one another and progressing in very important ways.
So Sofi, can make a great ___ right here because of the help that she’s received.
So let me thank Principal Hu for doing such an excellent job, and thank her for allowing us the opportunity to visit here today. ____
