Environment, Science, Technology & Health (ESTH)

Since it was established in 1979 under the Sino-US Science and Technology Agreement, U.S. Embassy Beijing’s Environment, Science, Technology and Health Section has been working to improve understanding and cooperation between the U.S. and Chinese governments on these issues.

As the largest overseas representative of the State Department's Bureau of Oceans, Environment, and Science (OES), the ESTH Section has the responsibility to use transformational diplomacy in China to advance environmental stewardship, encourage economic growth and promote social development.  Among the issues covered by ESTH are biodiversity, climate change, toxic chemical management, space exploration, clean energy development, environmental law collaboration and development, and emerging infectious diseases.

Counselor W. Brent Christensen is the head of the ESTH Office in Beijing.
