Clean Energy and Climate Change

China is the world's second-largest energy consumer after the U.S. and is the world's largest producer and consumer of coal.  China is also currently the world's largest producer of greenhouse gas and sulfur dioxide (SO2). However, China continues to make great strides in renewable energy development, especially in the areas of hydropower and wind power, and the recent Law on Renewable Energy sets a goal of using renewable energy sources for 10% of the country's electrical energy consumption.
China is a critical player in the Asia-Pacific Partnership (APP) on Clean Development and Climate, an initiative to accelerate the implementation and deployment of clean energy technologies in areas such as renewable energy, cleaner fossil fuel technologies, greenhouse gas reductions and cleaner power generation.  The United States Government's partners in the APP include the Department of State, the Department of Commerce, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the U.S. Agency for Aid and Development (USAID).
