Earthquake in China's Southwestern Sichuan Province

A 7.9-magnitude earthquake struck China's southwestern Sichuan province on Monday, May 12 at approximately 2:30 pm local time (2:30 a.m. EDT).

The quake's epicenter was located near the county of Wenchuan, 57 miles northwest of the provincial capital of Chengdu. Media and official reports indicate that although the earthquake was felt throughout China, the majority of damage occurred in Sichuan province. Reports indicate there was little structural damage in Chengdu, though China's official news agency reports significant damage and approximately 10,000 deaths in other areas closer to the epicenter.

There have been no reports of injuries or casualties to American citizens.

Telecommunications in the area have been disrupted though text messages are reportedly getting through. Some international cell phones have functioned.

The status of Chengdu Airport is unclear as most flights to Chengdu have been cancelled. American citizens traveling to or from Chengdu should check with their airline regarding their flight status.

Americans concerned about loved ones in the affected areas should continue to attempt to text or call them.
