James Mann
Journalist James Mann is the senior writer-in-residence at the Center for Strategic International Studies (CSIS). Mr. Mann was the diplomatic correspondent and the foreign affairs columnist for the Los Angeles Times, where he served as chief of its Beijing bureau (1984-1989). Since that time, he has covered all aspects of U.S.-China relations and U.S. policy toward Asia. Mr. Mann was twice the winner of the Edwin M. Hood Award (1993, 1999) for diplomatic reporting. In 2000, his book, About Face, won the New York Public Library's Helen Bernstein Award for book of the year and the Asia-Pacific Prize for best book about Asia. Mann holds a B.A. from Harvard College and was a guest scholar at the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars. He continues to contribute to the L.A. Times and has also written for the Atlantic Monthly, the New Republic and the Washington Post. He is a member of the Council on Foreign Relations.
