September 29, 2009
Beijing, People’s Republic of China
I am pleased to have had met today with a broad range of Chinese officials: Vice President Xi Jinping, State Councilor Dai Bingguo, Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi, Executive Vice Foreign Minister Wang Guangya, Vice Foreign Minister Wu Dawei, General Ma Xiaotian, MG Yang Hui, Vice Foreign Minister He Yafei, and had the chance to build on the productive talks held this past week between our two Presidents in New York and Pittsburgh. Over the first 8 months of the Obama administration, the United States and China have together made important strides in a shared commitment to building a positive, cooperative, and comprehensive relationship for the 21st century. In our discussion today, we focused on how we can address some of the key challenges facing the international community, from economic growth to climate change, global public health, non-proliferation, including North Korea and Iran, and combating terrorism. We also discussed the upcoming visit of President Obama, which will mark an important milestone in building mutual trust and respect between the people of China and the United States.
