PRESS RELEASE
UPS is Finalist for 2005 Award for Corporate Excellence
Shanghai, October 19, 2005
The transportation logistics company United Parcel Service (UPS) and the pharmaceutical company Merck and Company, Inc., have been named as finalists for the 2005 Award for Corporate Excellence (ACE). U.S. Ambassador to China Clark T. Randt, Jr. nominated both companies for their outstanding volunteer efforts in China. The ACE, established by the U.S. State Department in 1999, recognizes the important role U.S. businesses play abroad as good corporate citizens.
UPS is recognized for providing outstanding safety and health practices in the workplace for its employees and for delivering long-term benefits to local communities by helping educate underprivileged Chinese children, encouraging employee volunteerism and supporting charitable causes. Since 2002, UPS has worked in impoverished Chinese cities to construct school buildings, provide personal computers and musical instruments for schools, and establish a scholarship fund to allow underprivileged children to attend school. This year, UPS is working with the Project Hope Hong Kong Foundation, a U.S.-based, international health education foundation working with the Shanghai Children’s Medical Center, to improve health care delivery to children.
UPS Chairman & CEO Mike Eskew and U.S. Consul General in Shanghai Kenneth H. Jarrett were on hand at the Shanghai Children’s Medical Center October 19, 2005, as part of the third annual UPS Global Volunteer Week. Consul General Jarrett took the occasion to congratulate UPS Chairman and CEO Mike Eskew on UPS’ finalist standing in the ACE competition.
Two winners of the 2005 ACE -- one in the multinational (MNE) category and one in the small-to-medium enterprises (SME) category -- will be announced by Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice on November 2 at a ceremony in Washington, D.C.
