U.S. Performers in China

Category 1 Performing Arts Agencies in Beijing

Category one has government authorization both to send Chinese performers abroad on performing tours and to sponsor foreign performing troupes in China. There are twenty-four such agencies/companies in Beijing. Many of them were founded with support by or affiliation to a government institution. Some of them are no longer very active nowadays. Performing arts agencies/companies represented by China Performing Arts Agency (CPAA) and China National Culture and Art Company operate under the Ministry of Culture. Agencies/companies under provincial or municipal cultural bureaus belong to this category. The major difference between CPAA and other agencies of this category is that CPAA, as a government-funded agency, has the responsibility to implement cultural exchanges under government agreements while also doing commercial programs

China Performing Arts Agency (CPAA)

Founded in 1957, CPAA, directly under the Ministry of Culture, is the largest international performing arts agency in China.  It has built close relationships with various artistic agencies and companies in the world.  Every year, CPAA presents nearly 100 Chinese performing companies or groups in more than 50 countries and has, in the last 22 years, brought into China 22 world famous companies including Philadelphia Symphony Orchestra, Boston Symphony Orchestra, New York Philharmonic and the Cleveland Orchestra.

Yidu Cultural Development Company (Known as Beijing Music Festival)

Affiliated to Ministry of Culture, they have conducted three highly successful several-week long series of top-notch musical performances, all in concert halls, nothing unusual like an outdoor performance.  As a new organization, it is in a position to organize tours to other cities in China, as CPAA does, but not prepared to do so during the annual music festival.
