Olympic Games: The Olympic Games is an international sports competition subdivided into summer and winter sporting events. The summer and winter games are each held every four years at a different site, in which athletes from different countries compete against each other in a variety of individual and team sports. Until 1992, they were both held in the same year. Beginning in 1994, the summer and winter games were divided and scheduled on four-year cycles, two years apart. (more)

Olympic Rings and Flag: The Olympic rings were originally designed in 1913 by Baron Pierre de Coubertin, the founder of the modern Olympic Games. They were first displayed on the Olympic Flag in 1920. The five rings are interlaced to represent the idea that the Olympics are universal, bringing athletes from the entire world together. The five interlocking rings represent the five original continents: Africa, America, Asia, Australia, and Europe. The five colors of the rings (blue, yellow, black, green, and red respectively) were chosen since one of these colors can be found in the flag of each competing nation. (more)

The United States has hosted eight times of Olympic Games, four times each for the Summer and Winter Olympic Games. The U.S. hosted its first Olympics in 1904 in St. Louis, Missouri. The last U.S.-hosted summer Olympics were held in Atlanta in 1996, preceded by Los Angeles in 1984 and 1932 and by St. Louis in 1904. The most recent winter Olympics in the U.S. were held in Salt Lake City, Utah in 2002. (more)
